Black History Month: Building Opportunity for Every Family in York County

Blog

Black History Month is a time to honor leaders, recognize contributions, and celebrate culture. It is also a time to reflect on how we are building opportunity today and ensuring that every family in York County has a fair chance to succeed.

Celebration matters. But so does progress.

In York County, thousands of working families are striving to move forward while facing financial barriers that make stability difficult to achieve. ALICE data reveals the gap between what families earn and what it actually costs to meet basic needs, from housing and utilities to transportation and childcare. It shows how many workers still cannot make ends meet, even in a growing economy.

These insights give us clarity. They help our community understand where support systems must be strengthened and where solutions can open pathways to financial stability and lasting security for all.

Where Opportunity Gaps Remain

Financial hardship is not evenly distributed. While larger demographic groups may represent the greatest total number of households below the ALICE threshold, the proportion of households within certain communities experiencing financial instability is significantly higher.

When we look at the data by race and ethnicity, disparities become clear. Wage gaps persist across industries. Barriers to career advancement limit earning potential. Access to stable, full-time employment remains uneven. These structural factors contribute to higher rates of financial instability for some communities in York County.

The chart below illustrates how poverty and ALICE status vary by race and ethnicity in York County:

These disparities highlight where opportunity is not yet evenly accessible and where intentional, sustained action can make the greatest difference.

Understanding these gaps allows us to focus our efforts where they matter most, designing solutions that expand access to stable employment, strengthen financial security, and build long-term resilience for families across our community.

Turning Insight Into Action

Building opportunity requires more than awareness. It requires coordinated effort, data-informed strategy, and long-term commitment.

At United Way of York County, advancing financial stability is central to our Bold Goal. We use data to identify where opportunity gaps exist and direct resources where they can create meaningful impact. We partner with organizations that expand access to stable employment, workforce development, financial education, and pathways to advancement.

Through programs like MyFreeTaxes, Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA), workforce initiatives, and strategic funding partnerships, we work to ensure families have access to tools that strengthen financial resilience. This work is not short-term. Building opportunity takes time, collaboration, and persistence.

A Stronger Future for All

When opportunity expands, our entire community benefits. Children are better prepared for success in school. Workers gain greater stability and upward mobility. Employers have access to a stronger, more resilient workforce. Families experience fewer impossible tradeoffs.

Black History Month reminds us of the leadership, perseverance, and courage that have advanced progress throughout our nation’s history. It also reminds us that the work of expanding opportunity continues.

Building opportunity for every family in York County is not a single initiative. It is a shared responsibility. It requires partnerships across nonprofits, businesses, public agencies, and residents working together toward measurable progress.

This Black History Month, we recommit to ensuring that opportunity is not limited by circumstance. We recommit to strengthening pathways to financial stability. And we recommit to building a York County where every family has the chance not just to get by, but to thrive.

Because when opportunity is accessible to all, our entire community grows stronger.
