For many households, tax season plays a critical role in financial stability.
A correctly filed return can mean access to crucial tax credits that help cover rent, childcare, groceries, or utilities. But for families already stretched thin, filing taxes can feel overwhelming, confusing, and costly. Even small mistakes can delay refunds or result in missed benefits.
That’s where Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) comes in.
Each year, IRS-certified VITA volunteers provide free tax preparation to those in our community who need assistance in preparing their own tax returns, including but not limited to persons with disabilities and limited English-speaking taxpayers.
“I’m happy to be part of the VITA program so I can assist the community in getting the tax credits they are due and access free tax preparation assistance when needed at no costs through VITA. It’s another great year to assist others with their income tax returns.” said Bill Perry, VITA Coordinator.
Why Free Tax Preparation Matters
The tax system is one of the primary ways working families access financial support like the Child Tax Credit and the Earned Income Credit. Yet millions of low- and moderate-income filers still pay to file their taxes, often because the process feels intimidating or they worry about making a mistake.
For families living paycheck to paycheck, those fees reduce the very refunds and credits meant to help them get ahead.
“Too many working families qualify for important tax credits but don’t always receive their full benefit because the filing process feels confusing or out of reach,” said Rebecca Melton, President of United Way of York County, SC. “VITA helps remove that barrier by offering trusted, free assistance so families can keep more of what they earn and build a stronger financial foundation.”
A Program Built on Trust and Accuracy
VITA has been part of communities across the country for more than 50 years. Volunteers are trained and certified by the IRS, and the program maintains a high standard of accuracy and confidentiality. For many filers, VITA offers peace of mind, knowing their return has been prepared carefully, correctly, and with their best interest in mind.
Beyond the numbers, VITA is also about dignity. It creates a supportive, respectful environment where individuals can ask questions, understand their return, and move through tax season with confidence.
Supporting Financial Stability in Our Community
At United Way of York County, supporting VITA is one way we work toward long-term financial stability for local families. By helping people access the tax credits and refunds they qualify for, we are addressing a critical moment in the year when financial pressure is often at its highest.
Tax preparation may seem like a once-a-year task, but its impact can last far beyond April. For many households, a refund can mean catching up on bills, building a small emergency cushion, or simply breathing a little easier.
As tax season approaches, we encourage community members who need assistance to take advantage of this free, trusted resource and remind one another that no one has to navigate financial challenges alone.
