It matters to Margaret.
What started as a slight chest pain as she prepared her classroom for students to return to school quickly left Margaret unconscious and coworkers calling 911. Fort Mill Rescue arrived within moments and trained medics used the latest technology to search for cardiac issues and record her vital statistics. Before arriving at the hospital, Fort Mill Rescue Squad medics had identified her stroke and forwarded her information to the ER doctors waiting at the door.

It matters to the Martins.
Teresa and her two daughters pulled into their driveway, in shock to see their family home reduced to smoldering ashes. All their photos, memories, toys, medications, documents - everything but the clothes on their back and each other had gone up in smoke. Thanks to your United Way contributions supporting American Red Cross' disaster relief fund, the Martin family was immediately given temporary shelter, clothing, and a much needed teddy bear to offer comfort. The next day, American Red Cross officials helped by finding an apartment, paying deposits and providing beds to help the family get back on their feet.

It matters to the Thompson family.
Sharon was an independent woman in her later years, enjoying her work, friends, and get-away weekend vacations. Her daughter turned Sharon's life upside down, dropping her two grandchildren off and leaving town, turning Sharon into a single "mother" of two. Sharon quickly realized her job couldn't support two school-aged children and after school care, but she also knew she had to work now more than ever and her grandchildren were too young to stay home alone. She approached the YMCA after school program and explained her situation. They understood. The YMCA offered Sharon's family a scholarship, making the program affordable for both children. Sharon was able to work the extra hours needed and her grandchildren were safe in supervised care.
Thanks to United Way contributions, YMCA is able to offer scholarship programs for families like Sharon and her grandchildren, providing children the supervision and assistance needed for success in school and a foundation for a successful future.
While serving overseas with the US military, Robert's grandfather passed away. His family in York County contacted the American Red Cross-York County Chapter to send an emergency message to Robert to request his presence at home. Immediately, American Red Cross notified his unit and military authorities granted him emergency leave for 10 days. Several days later, Robert contacted American Red Cross for assistance in requesting a leave extension to help with his grandfather's estate. Again, the American Red Cross contacted the appropriate authorities, and he was granted an extension.
After providing financial support to his family and assisting with the burial costs, Robert needed to return to his unit overseas, however, he lacked the funding to do so. He turned to the American Red Cross again, asking for assistance. American Red Cross-York County Chapter helped Robert complete the paperwork and was able to secure the funding needed to return him to his unit.
