United Way offers free drug card

United Way of York County, SC continues to promote their free prescription drug cards, available across York County, to help people with no prescription coverage lower the cost of their medicine.

The FamilyWize drug cards are being distributed free of charge, courtesy of United Way of York County, SC, in partnership with Membership Services Corporation, located in Lehigh Valley, Pennsylvania. Most pharmacies in York County accept these prescription drug discount cards and have them available at their location.  There is no usage or age limits, income requirements or registration forms, and can be used immediately to reduce the cost of medicate for anyone that has no prescription drug coverage.

United Way began promoting the free drug cards in June 2007.  Through the help of media outlets, agencies, and other marketing, York County residents are saving thousands of dollars a month on prescription drug expenses.  First quarter 2007, only 23 claims had been filed using the FamilyWize drug cards, saving only $440.66 in York County for the quarter.  This year’s first quarter results are vastly different, highlighting the uninsured issue in York County. From January to March 2008, more than 5,400 prescriptions have been filled using the FamilyWize discount prescription drug card, saving York County residents over $119,300.

“Too many families have insufficient or no prescription drug coverage at all,” United Way President Kim Keel said.  “Healthcare costs are one of the top concerns for people in our community and the FamilyWize discount prescription drug cards will help families who otherwise could not afford much needed prescription drugs.”

According to membership Service Corporation, more than 14,200 prescriptions have been filled across South Carolina using the FamilyWize prescription discount card, saving South Carolina residents more than $220,000 in this quarter alone.  York County consistently ranks first in the state for number of claims filed and dollars saved by using the FamilyWize card and often ranks in the top 10 counties in the nation.

“Membership Services Corporation and its industry partners are very excited to partner with United Way agencies to get the FamilyWize card into the hands of families who most need the help,” Dan Barnes, President of Membership Services Corporation, said.  “The FamilyWize community service partnership is committed to reducing the cost of medicine for children, families and individuals with no prescription drug coverage by $100 million in five years.”

People with internet access can print a card by visiting www.familywize.com, as well as look up drug prices and the list of participating pharmacies.  Discount cards can also be obtained from one of 28 local participating pharmacies, or by calling United Way of York County, SC at (803) 324-2735.
